There’s a smell that stops you mid-step. It hits the second you push through the door of a great Italian market: crusty bread cooling on the rack, sharp provolone mingling with aged salami, a whisper of espresso from somewhere behind the counter. It’s the kind of scent that makes you forget your shopping list and start pointing at things behind the glass instead.

New Jersey doesn’t just have Italian markets. New Jersey is Italian markets. From multi-generational family bakeries in Bloomfield to sprawling gourmet grocers in Monmouth County, the Garden State has one of the richest Italian food traditions in the country. For anyone settling into a new neighborhood or simply looking for the best sopressata within driving distance, these are the places worth knowing about.

🧀 Uncle Giuseppe’s Marketplace

Full-Scale Italian Grocer
3 NJ Locations
Bakery · Butcher · Deli · Prepared Foods

What started as a family operation on Long Island has grown into one of the most beloved Italian grocery experiences in the tri-state area. Uncle Giuseppe’s now operates three New Jersey locations in Morris Plains, Ramsey, and Tinton Falls — each one a full-scale Italian marketplace with departments spanning bakery, butcher, seafood, deli, and a prepared foods section that could feed your entire block.

What Makes It Special

Uncle Giuseppe’s isn’t your typical grocery store. The prepared food section alone is worth the trip — hot entrees, brick-oven pizza, and an olive bar that could double as a Roman market stall. Their bakery turns out fresh Italian bread daily alongside cannoli, sfogliatelle, and seasonal specialties. The deli counter offers imported and domestic cheeses and cured meats sliced to order, and the quality of their fresh mozzarella has earned a devoted following.

NJ Locations: Morris Plains (1711 NJ-10) · Ramsey (10 Triangle Plaza) · Tinton Falls (990 Shrewsbury Ave)

🥖 Livoti’s Old World Market

Award-Winning Italian Grocer
5 NJ Locations
Monmouth & Ocean Counties

If Uncle Giuseppe’s is the Italian marketplace with the polished showroom feel, Livoti’s Old World Market is its warmer, scrappier cousin — and equally beloved. Founded in Aberdeen in 2010, Livoti’s has expanded to five locations across Monmouth and Ocean Counties (Aberdeen, Middletown, Marlboro, Freehold, and Brick). They’ve earned a reputation as one of the top Italian grocers in Central Jersey, and for good reason.

What Makes It Special

Livoti’s has been voted the best deli, caterer, grocer, and bakery in the region by multiple publications. Their in-house fresh mozzarella is made daily, and they stock over 100 varieties of cheese from around the world. The gourmet bakery produces cookies, pastries, cakes, and fresh bread that evoke the feel of a cobblestone Italian side street. Their catering operation is one of the most respected in Monmouth County — making them a go-to for everything from weeknight dinners to large-scale events.

🍞 Gencarelli’s Bakery

Family Bakery Since 1975
Bloomfield & Wayne
Italian Kitchen & Market Expansion

Some places earn their reputation over decades. Gencarelli’s has been earning theirs since 1975, when Rosaria and Ernesto Gencarelli opened a tiny bread-only bakery on Broad Street in Bloomfield. Fifty years later, the family business has grown into one of the most celebrated Italian bakeries in all of North Jersey, with a second location in Wayne and a new Italian kitchen and market expansion in the works at the corner of Hamburg Turnpike and St. Moritz Place.

What Makes It Special

Gencarelli’s is the kind of place where people drive from other counties — and even other states — just to pick up a birthday cake or a tray of mini cannoli. The second generation still runs the operation and can jump into any station, from bread baking to donut frying to cake decorating. Their Italian cheesecake and hazelnut mousse cake have earned cult followings, and the aroma when you walk through the door is enough to make you forget every diet you’ve ever started. The newer Wayne location has expanded into an Italian market concept with a deli, coffee, and gelato.

🫒 Corrado’s Market

Family-Owned Since 1950
Clifton, NJ
Italian & International Specialty Market

Family-owned and operated since 1950, Corrado’s Market in Clifton is one of the longest-running Italian specialty food stores in North Jersey. The flagship location on Main Avenue is a sprawling, old-school market that feels more like a European food hall than a suburban grocery store. It’s the kind of place where you come in for a jar of San Marzanos and leave with three bags of things you didn’t know you needed.

What Makes It Special

Corrado’s carries an enormous selection of imported Italian products — from olive oils and balsamic vinegars to coffees, cookies, and an entire wall of canned tomato products that would make a Neapolitan grandmother weep with joy. The produce section is stocked with farm-fresh fruits and vegetables, and the bakery carries bread from some of the best bakers in the region. Corrado’s recently underwent a significant refresh and renovation of its Clifton flagship, updating the store while staying true to its roots as a 75-year family institution.

🥩 Fiore’s House of Quality

Hoboken Legend Since 1913
Cash Only
House-Made Mozzarella

There are delis, and then there’s Fiore’s. Tucked into a side street in Hoboken since 1913, Fiore’s House of Quality is less a marketplace and more a pilgrimage site for anyone who takes Italian sandwiches seriously. This is the kind of place that has been featured on shows like Man vs. Food and Best Thing I Ever Ate, and the lines out the door on a Saturday afternoon tell you everything you need to know.

What Makes It Special

The star of the show is the house-made mozzarella, pulled fresh daily and served warm with whatever happens to be on the daily special rotation: roast beef with gravy on Thursdays and Saturdays, Virginia ham on Mondays, corned beef on Tuesdays, sausage with red sauce on Wednesdays, and Italian tuna on Fridays. There’s no set printed menu. You walk in, you see what’s on, and you trust the process. Cash only, no indoor seating, and worth every bit of the wait.

Location: 414 Adams Street, Hoboken

Hours: Mon–Sat, 8am–6pm · (201) 659-1655 · Cash Only

🥪 Andrea Salumeria

Family-Run Since 1975
Jersey City Heights
Pugliese Tradition

Andrea Salumeria in the Heights section of Jersey City is the definition of an Italian deli that punches above its weight. Founded in 1975, this family-run shop has narrow aisles crammed with imported Italian groceries, dried meats, and specialty products from across Europe. The space is small. The sandwiches are not.

What Makes It Special

Rooted in the culinary traditions of Puglia, Italy, Andrea Salumeria is known for hand-selecting imported cold cuts and cheeses, and their fresh homemade mozzarella is consistently ranked among the best in the state. The Combo sandwich — loaded with ham, salami, sopressata, capicola, mozzarella, provolone, and sweet peppers — has earned a near-legendary reputation. Owner Pete Soriano treats every customer like family and is known for remembering regulars by name. Come before noon to beat the lunch rush, or call ahead to place your order.

Location: 247 Central Avenue, Jersey City Heights

🍕 Cosmo’s Italian Salumeria

Old-School Salumeria Since 1996
Hackensack
Cash Only

Cosmo’s in Hackensack is one of those places that looks unassuming from the outside but commands a devoted following that stretches across Bergen County and beyond. Since 1996, this old-school salumeria has been serving up some of the best Italian sandwiches in North Jersey from a no-frills counter on Main Street. The decor is vintage. The bread is crusty. The mozzarella is made in-house.

What Makes It Special

Cosmo’s is a purist’s deli. The Italian hero, eggplant parm, and chicken cutlet sandwiches are built with fresh, high-quality ingredients on bread with the perfect crunch-to-chew ratio. The atmosphere feels like stepping into a time capsule, with Italian grocery items lining the walls and Cosmo himself behind the counter greeting regulars. The line during lunchtime can stretch out the door, but locals will tell you there’s no better Italian sandwich in Bergen County.

Location: 705 Main Street, Hackensack

Hours: Mon–Fri 8am–4pm · Sat 9am–3pm · Sun 9am–1pm · (201) 342-8076 · Cash Only

🔥 DeLucia’s Brick Oven Pizza

Operating Since 1917
Raritan, NJ
Pizza Hall of Fame

DeLucia’s isn’t a marketplace in the traditional sense. It’s a tiny, twelve-table pizzeria in Raritan that has been operating out of the same building — with the same original brick oven — since 1917. But any conversation about Italian food institutions in New Jersey that doesn’t include DeLucia’s is an incomplete one.

What Makes It Special

Italian immigrant Constantino DeLucia started here as a bread baker, delivering loaves by horse and buggy as far as Martinsville. Pizza was added in the 1930s, and by the 1950s the family went all in on pies. Today the fourth generation runs the operation, and the menu remains beautifully stripped down: pizza, calzones, and two salads. That’s it. Barstool’s Dave Portnoy gave DeLucia’s a 9.4 rating, and the place has been inducted into the Pizza Hall of Fame. They make a limited number of pies each day — and when they’re gone, they’re gone. Arrive early or risk finding a “Sold Out” sign on the door.

Location: 3 First Avenue, Raritan

🏆 Honorable Mentions

New Jersey’s Italian food scene runs deep, and no single list can capture it all. A few more spots worth adding to your rotation:

More Markets Worth Exploring

Durazzo’s Italian Market and Deli (Brick, NJ) — A family-owned staple since 1973, known for loaded sandwiches and authentic imported Italian goods. Old-school service where they still make everything fresh and by hand.

Bagliani’s Market (Hammonton, NJ) — Now in its fourth generation, Bagliani’s is a South Jersey institution famous for its legendary “wall of cheese” and a full-service deli stocked with authentic Italian specialty products.

A&S Salumeria (Millstone, NJ) — A Central Jersey gem where the owner still makes fresh mozzarella by hand — and explains what makes it great while he does it.

🏡 Why Italian Markets Matter When You’re Choosing a Neighborhood

There’s something telling about a town that supports a thriving Italian market. It speaks to a community that values quality over convenience, tradition alongside innovation, and the kind of neighborhood fabric where the guy behind the deli counter knows your name and what you ordered last week.

When you’re evaluating New Jersey towns, pay attention to the food infrastructure. A great Italian market within a short drive isn’t just a perk — it’s a signal that you’re moving into a place where people care about how they eat, how they gather, and how they live.
